An aircond that runs all night but leaves the bedroom warm is usually dirty, sometimes low on gas, and occasionally broken. Here is how to tell which - and what it costs to fix.

A chemical wash fixes the most common cause - a coil clogged with damp dust. Start with a general service if the unit was cleaned recently.

Mode
Is the remote on Cool (snowflake), not Dry, Fan or Auto? Dry mode in particular feels weak.

Temperature setting
Set it to 24°C and give it 20 minutes. Setting 16°C doesn't cool faster.

Filter
Pull out the filters behind the front panel. If they're grey and furry, rinse them and try again.

Outdoor unit
Is its fan spinning? Is it blocked by laundry, plants or a cover? It needs space to release heat.

Usual causes
Dirty coil or blower
Air is cold but weak. Fixed by a chemical wash.
Low gas
Air is barely cool, frost on pipes. Needs a leak check and gas top up.
Faulty capacitor
Indoor fan runs, outdoor unit silent. Small part, quick repair.
Wrong size
Unit too small for the room. Common when a 1.0hp is moved to a bigger room.

A general service costs RM89.24, a chemical wash RM147.20, an R32 gas top up RM92.00, and a diagnosis visit RM46.00.

Filters and cover washed, coil and blower cleaned, drain tray and pipe cleared, compressor checked and gas pressure measured.
Mould on the coil is not removed by a general service. A chemical wash is the fix; the technician will advise you.
A general service starts at RM89.24 for one wall-mounted unit, including transport. Servicing more units on the same visit lowers the price per unit.
Every four to six months for units used daily. If you run it all night, every four months keeps it efficient and saves on your TNB bill.
